Pete Azcue
Relief Pitcher | Free Agents
Pitching He's a good late inning man, which is when being a pitcher really counts. If you're going in to face Azcue, better be wearing plenty of protection. He's wild. You know, some times I think I can throw harder than Azcue, and that's saying a lot. Azcue has no endurance. He's good for an inning an outing, tops. The one thing I must say I don't like about Azcue is how easily rattled he gets. If he makes a mistake to a hitter and the guy winds up on second or third, you can pretty much count on the guy scoring. He frequently leaves fastballs up in the strike zone, where they get pounded. But Azcue, do us a favor. Stop throwing that changeup. It looks like a beachball. When you throw a curveball, it better break. Hanging curves equal earned runs in this league, you just can't get away with them. Unfortunately, Azcue's curveball tends to hang. He attacks lefties and righties with similar success.
Defense & Hitting He doesn't hold runners very close, which gives his catcher a bit of a workout. He hurts himself by falling awkwardly off the mound in his follow-through, which allows too many balls to go through the middle for base hits. Azcue is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Azcue has some pop in his swing. Interesting sidenote, The Free Agents have been known to use Azcue as a pinch-runner on occasion.
2010 Outlook What The Free Agents was thinking when they signed Azcue to a long contract, is beyond me: this guy flat-out sucks. But if you ask me, I'll pass on Azcue.
