Jason Grilli
Starting Pitcher | Baltimore Orioles
Pitching He's unflappable on the mound, possessing the confidence to throw any of his offerings at any time in the count. Grilli performs extremely well in the late innings, but unfortunately his endurance prevents him from getting there very often. Grilli can get into trouble with walks, and there's concern about him being able to maintain his stuff over the whole season. Grilli has to keep the ball down, especially against lefties, or he gets hit hard and often. His fastball gets into the high 80s, but it's the sink that makes the pitch effective. Grilli also has a decent changeup. Dating back to his days in the minors, Grilli has been more effective against righthanders than lefthanders.
Defense & Hitting He has quick feet and can catch runners napping at first or second base. He tends to fall off slightly to the first-base side of the mound, making him vulnerable to bunts toward third base. He makes up for that minor flaw by being aggressive in fielding his position. Grilli is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Grilli has some pop in his swing.
