Ed Mallon
Relief Pitcher | Retired or Inactive Players
Pitching This guy has closer written all over him. He can get groundballs when he needs them in a jam. His slider is sharp and breaks both horizontally and vertically. If you're going in to face Mallon, better be wearing plenty of protection. He's wild. Never a hard thrower, Mallon now has games when he can't hit 85 MPH with his fastball. The running movement on his pitches makes life tougher on lefties than righties.
Defense & Hitting He tends to fall off slightly to the first-base side of the mound, making him vulnerable to bunts toward third base. He makes up for that minor flaw by being aggressive in fielding his position. He never has controlled the running game. Mallon is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Mallon has some pop in his swing. Interesting sidenote, The Retired or Inactive Players have been known to use Mallon as a pinch-runner on occasion.
2010 Outlook What The Retired or Inactive Players was thinking when they signed Mallon to a long contract, is beyond me: this guy flat-out sucks. Mallon isn't cutting the mustard in the low minors. It's time for Ed to investigate other career options, like coaching highschool ball. But if you ask me, I'll pass on Mallon.
