Matt Merullo
Catcher | Retired or Inactive Players

Hitting
Merullo never has been a patient hitter. Let's face facts: Merullo hits a lot of ground balls... and in my book, if you're slow of foot and put the ball on the ground, you're bound to get tied up in the double play. He hangs in well against lefthanders' breaking balls, and some of the pitchers he hits best are the southpaw specialists often brought in to face him.

Baserunning & Defense
He has below-average speed and is stiff on the basepath. He's poor on a straight steal but has some success at reading pitchers and working a delayed steal. Merullo is a poor defensive catcher. His weak, erratic throwing arm is his greatest liability.

2010 Outlook
Merullo flat-out isn't ready for this level of competition. Expect the Retired or Inactive Players to send him down promptly.
