Ben Sheets
Starting Pitcher | New York Yankees
Pitching He keeps his pitches low in the strike zone and throws a heavy ball. Sheets can get into trouble with walks, and there's concern about him being able to maintain his stuff over the whole season. His fastball gets into the high 80s, but it's the sink that makes the pitch effective. Sheets also has a decent changeup. When you throw a curveball, it better break. Hanging curves equal earned runs in this league, you just can't get away with them. Unfortunately, Sheets's curveball tends to hang. He attacks lefties and righties with similar success.
Defense & Hitting A decent fielder, Sheets is quick around the mound and has good instincts. His pickoff move is only fair. Sheets is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Sheets has some pop in his swing.
2010 Outlook The New York Yankees signed him to a long-term contract, but don't think they won't drop Sheets like a hot potato if something better comes along.
