Scott Watkins
Relief Pitcher | Free Agents
Pitching He struggles with his command at times and is still learning to mix his pitches and set up hitters. Sometimes I wish he'd just give up on throwing the changeup, it's like a BP ball! You know, some times I think I can throw harder than Watkins, and that's saying a lot. Watkins has no endurance. He's good for an inning an outing, tops. The one thing I must say I don't like about Watkins is how easily rattled he gets. If he makes a mistake to a hitter and the guy winds up on second or third, you can pretty much count on the guy scoring. He frequently leaves fastballs up in the strike zone, where they get pounded. When you throw a curveball, it better break. Hanging curves equal earned runs in this league, you just can't get away with them. Unfortunately, Watkins's curveball tends to hang. The running movement on his pitches makes life tougher on lefties than righties.
Defense & Hitting His pickoff move is merely average. Watkins is nothing special in the field. Watkins is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Watkins has some pop in his swing. Interesting sidenote, The Free Agents have been known to use Watkins as a pinch-runner on occasion.
2010 Outlook But if you ask me, I'll pass on Watkins.
