Gene Dodd
Starting Pitcher | Free Agents
Pitching Dodd has to keep the ball down, especially against lefties, or he gets hit hard and often. He has an above-average changeup and the ability to throw from a variety of arm angles. If you're going in to face Dodd, better be wearing plenty of protection. He's wild. You know, some times I think I can throw harder than Dodd, and that's saying a lot. Dating back to his days in the minors, Dodd has been more effective against righthanders than lefthanders.
Defense & Hitting He doesn't hold runners very close, which gives his catcher a bit of a workout. Dodd doesn't field his position well. Dodd is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Dodd has some pop in his swing. Interesting sidenote, The Free Agents have been known to use Dodd as a pinch-runner on occasion.
2010 Outlook What The Free Agents was thinking when they signed Dodd to a long contract, is beyond me: this guy flat-out sucks. But if you ask me, I'll pass on Dodd.
