Sid Fernandez
Starting Pitcher | Retired or Inactive Players
Pitching He's a pretty good ground-ball pitcher, which I like because ground balls stay in the park. He's a good late inning man, which is when being a pitcher really counts. Fernandez can get into trouble with walks, and there's concern about him being able to maintain his stuff over the whole season. When his release point drops below three-quarters, his fastball tends to hang in the strike zone. He tends to work slowly when in a jam, which just makes his problems worse by lulling his fielders to sleep. But Fernandez, do us a favor. Stop throwing that changeup. It looks like a beachball. He traditionally fares better against lefties. He absolutely loves playing before the hometown crowd.
Defense & Hitting He never has controlled the running game. Fernandez never has been a good fielder. Fernandez is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Fernandez has some pop in his swing. Interesting sidenote, The Retired or Inactive Players have been known to use Fernandez as a pinch-runner on occasion.
