Mark Portugal
Starting Pitcher | Retired or Inactive Players
Pitching He's a good late inning man, which is when being a pitcher really counts. Portugal can get into trouble with walks, and there's concern about him being able to maintain his stuff over the whole season. He has an above-average changeup and the ability to throw from a variety of arm angles. Because he can't overpower hitters, Portugal has to fool them instead. His pitches lose some movement when he pitches from the stretch position. The running movement on his pitches makes life tougher on lefties than righties.
Defense & Hitting His move to first isn't very good, but his delivery is fairly quick and he isn't overly vulnerable to the stolen base. A shaky fielder, he's slow to react to grounders and often looks unsure on his throws to the bases. Portugal is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Portugal has some pop in his swing. Interesting sidenote, The Retired or Inactive Players have been known to use Portugal as a pinch-runner on occasion.
