Jay Powell
Relief Pitcher | Pittsburgh Pirates
Pitching Powell has the classic closer's arsenal: a high-90s fastball and a sharp, hard slider. He produces tons of groundballs with his downward movement. This guy has closer written all over him. I love Powell's sinker. This thing plummets like a rock at 59 feet. Powell's bread and butter pitch is his slider. I've seen it baffle many a lefty. Powell is a control pitcher; when he's on he has pinpoint control. He's got a really stong arm, so he can blow it by you on occasion. Powell's fastball was clocked at 95 MPH most of the season and he kept excellent control of it. He traditionally fares better against lefties.
Defense & Hitting A fluid delivery leaves him in good shape for fielding, and he has a reputation as a competent defender. His biggest weakness is controlling the running game, though he was decent last year. Powell is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Powell has some pop in his swing.
2010 Outlook Powell has arguably the best stuff in baseball.
