Dennis Springer
Starting Pitcher | Retired or Inactive Players
Pitching He struggles with his command at times and is still learning to mix his pitches and set up hitters. His composure needs work. When Springer starts getting hit, he gets mad and loses concentration. Sometimes I wish he'd just give up on throwing the changeup, it's like a BP ball! You know, some times I think I can throw harder than Springer, and that's saying a lot. He frequently leaves fastballs up in the strike zone, where they get pounded. He attacks lefties and righties the same way.
Defense & Hitting His slow delivery makes him fairly easy to steal upon, but Springer helps himself by holding runners with throws to first, and with slide steps and varied deliveries to home. He isn't especially quick off the mound but generally fields his position adequately. Springer is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Springer has some pop in his swing. Interesting sidenote, The Retired or Inactive Players have been known to use Springer as a pinch-runner on occasion.
2010 Outlook I can't say I know what The Retired or Inactive Players were doing locking this guy up to a long term contract. A questionable call at best. AA isn't the right place for Springer. Expect the Retired or Inactive Players to send him down for some minor retooling. I just don't know if The Retired or Inactive Players are ever going to get what they expect out of him.
