John Wasdin
Starting Pitcher | Pittsburgh Pirates
Pitching Wasdin can get into trouble with walks, and there's concern about him being able to maintain his stuff over the whole season. His fastball gets into the high 80s, but it's the sink that makes the pitch effective. Wasdin also has a decent changeup. He tends to work slowly when in a jam, which just makes his problems worse by lulling his fielders to sleep. He's almost as effective against lefthanders as he is versus righthanders.
Defense & Hitting Wasdin is a reliable fielder who doesn't get rattled on defensive plays and is rarely out of fielding position. He never has controlled the running game. Wasdin is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Wasdin has some pop in his swing.
2010 Outlook If Wasdin doesn't perform, the Pittsburgh Pirates won't hesitate to send him down to the minors. I just don't know if The Pittsburgh Pirates are ever going to get what they expect out of him.
