Tom Wood
Relief Pitcher | Free Agents
Pitching Wood has to keep the ball down, especially against lefties, or he gets hit hard and often. Wood also has a decent changeup. If you're going in to face Wood, better be wearing plenty of protection. He's wild. You know, some times I think I can throw harder than Wood, and that's saying a lot. The one thing I must say I don't like about Wood is how easily rattled he gets. If he makes a mistake to a hitter and the guy winds up on second or third, you can pretty much count on the guy scoring. Dating back to his days in the minors, Wood has been more effective against righthanders than lefthanders.
Defense & Hitting He isn't especially quick off the mound but generally fields his position adequately. Wood doesn't make much of an attempt to combat the running game. Basestealers ran at will last year. Wood is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Wood has some pop in his swing. Interesting sidenote, The Free Agents have been known to use Wood as a pinch-runner on occasion.
2010 Outlook What The Free Agents was thinking when they signed Wood to a long contract, is beyond me: this guy flat-out sucks. But if you ask me, I'll pass on Wood.
